In a world where long-term job stability is a rarity and commitment seems like an echo from the past, the story of Esteban Statia, known as Iván, stands as a testament to steadfastness, faithfulness and dedication.
Iván devoted his life to the ministry of TWR Bonaire, leaving not only a tangible legacy in the structures he helped build but also a spiritual impact that transcends generations. His story inspires, challenges and invites us to reflect on the true meaning of service.
Fifty years ago, Iván joined TWR Bonaire, thanks to a recommendation from a former employee. What began as a job opportunity quickly became a life calling. Iván didn’t just take on his daily tasks as a maintenance worker; he embraced them as acts of service to God.
Joe Barker, former station director of TWR Bonaire, fondly recalls how Iván would always arrive early – not just to begin work but to spend time in prayer and Bible reading. “He was meticulous in everything he did, from painting walls to assembling cabinets,” Barker said. “His level of excellence was almost artisanal. He wouldn’t even let a single drop of paint fall.”
Iván understood from the very beginning that his work, no matter how simple it seemed, was part of a greater purpose: delivering the message of salvation to millions in the Caribbean and Latin America through TWR’s radio waves.
The Craftsman of Excellence and Unwavering Faith
Over the years, Iván wasn’t just a worker; he became a master of details and a model of integrity. Whether operating equipment at the transmission towers, building housing for missionaries or solving complex issues, he always carried out his tasks with a servant’s heart and unwavering commitment.
Jason Helmholdt, the current station director of TWR Bonaire, describes him as the most dedicated employee he has ever worked with. “Iván could fix almost anything,” Helmholdt said. “While I tried to learn from him, he would always humbly ask me, ‘What do you think we should do?’ Even though he already knew the answer, his humility was genuine. That attitude made all the difference.”
Iván was not a man of many words, but his actions spoke volumes. His emotional stability and focus on God made him a pillar of the ministry. One of the most memorable stories occurred when Barker had to leave a project in the Dominican Republic due to a family emergency, leaving Iván in charge. Despite the job requiring two people, Iván completed it alone, even handling the project’s finances. “His commitment and responsibility were exceptional,” Barker recalls.
According to Iván, his strength came from the Word of God. Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever,” was the verse that guided him throughout his journey. This constant reminder helped him remain steadfast in both challenging and joyous moments.
A Love Forged in Service
Iván’s story would not be complete without mentioning Azalia, his wife and life partner. Their love story began on Bonaire, where Azalia arrived as an intern for the ministry. Together, they formed a strong team, serving the Lord and supporting each other every step of the way.
“As a husband, Iván is funny, patient and loving,” Azalia shared. “He always gave his best at work, whether it was a simple task or a complex challenge. His heart for service was evident both in the ministry and in our community.”
Azalia also recalls how Iván extended his help beyond his job, supporting family members, acquaintances and members of the body of Christ in Bonaire. His faith and willingness to serve made him a respected and admired figure both inside and outside the ministry.
A Legacy and the Next Chapter
The impact Iván left on TWR Bonaire isn’t measured merely by completed projects or years of service. His true legacy lies in the example of faithfulness and excellence he set for those who knew him. He is a living testament that even the smallest tasks can glorify God.
“Working for the Lord for 50 years meant pressing on and staying focused on him,” Iván reflects. One of his most treasured memories was witnessing the power upgrade of the 450,000-watt transmitter in January 2018, an event that symbolized years of effort and dedication.
Now that Iván is retiring, he plans to spend more time with his family and enjoy a quieter life. However, his influence on TWR Bonaire and the lives of those who worked with him will endure. Barker sums it up movingly: “Thank you, Iván and Azalia, for your friendship and service. May the Lord richly bless you in this new chapter of your lives.”
Iván Statia’s life teaches us that true success isn’t found in achieving great positions but in the faithfulness with which we fulfill our responsibilities, no matter how small. In a world that values speed and the temporary, Iván reminds us that eternal impact comes from steadfastness and selfless service.
As Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Ivan lived this truth for 50 years, and his example will continue to inspire those who seek to serve with purpose and excellence.
Thank God for faithful people like Iván who show us the value of a life well lived. His story continues to be written in the lives he touched and the ministry he helped build.
