Is the Bible still relevant today?

By Philipp Rüsch
Europe, Global, NW Europe
Let me ask you a few questions, and you can answer them for yourself.
  1. Do you want to grow in wisdom?
  2. Do you want to know how people with issues similar to yours dealt with them millennia ago?
  3. Are you in need of hope and encouragement, and could you use words of comfort and peace?
  4. Are you wondering whether God exists? And do you wonder what he is like?
  5. Are you interested in topics such as love, loss, gratitude, generosity, relationships, depression, habits or leadership?

If you answer any of these questions with a yes, then the Bible is still relevant to you and your life today. In this book you will find answers to all these questions and topics.

The Bible has so much to offer us, answers to the issues we face today. In all this time, people have not changed so much after all. But I must warn you: The answers you will find might not necessarily be the answers you expect.

Yes, there are parts of the Bible that are difficult to understand. I don’t get everything in it either. Some stories sound weird in our 21st-century context. But we are also not the primary audience all this was written to. We need to keep that in mind.

In my experience, however, there has never been a situation about which I couldn’t find a suitable story or verse in the Bible to give me answers or encouragement. And that is one of the beauties of the Bible. It is very diverse and comprises so many literary styles and authors that speak into so many situations.

I find this book fascinating. It has so many facets, mysteries and truths to discover – more than can be explored and comprehended in a lifetime. Your understanding of this book grows with your own maturity (if you allow it). As you mature and understand more of life, you will also discover and understand more of the Bible. Some passages might not make sense to you as a teenager but will grow more meaningful when you are older (and wiser).

If you have not picked up this book in a while, I would recommend starting with reading the gospel of Mark in the New Testament. It is a straightforward telling of the life of Jesus – short, easy to understand and with great wisdom. Keep going when you find something strange or incomprehensible or boring. Ask someone with more experience reading the Bible to explain the background.

And I would recommend asking God to speak to you before you open his book. Even if you don’t believe he exists, just give him a try to see if he will prove you wrong. Nothing to lose, right?!
