How Hope Is Found in Conflict

With more than 100 conflicts waging worldwide, there's no shortage of suffering among people caught in the crossfire. TWR is endeavoring to put hope within reach of those living even in the most desperate of circumstances.

Conflict among humans dates back at least to when Cain “rose up against his brother Abel and killed him” (Genesis 4:8).

Whether a full-scale war or a heated argument between two people, conflict dogs our steps. In September 2025, the Switzerland-based Geneva Academy found more than 110 armed conflicts in the world.

Other researchers count the numbers differently. But few would dispute the academy’s overall conclusion:

“Armed conflicts, notably in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine, generated large-scale suffering and exposed the limits of enforcement and accountability,” wrote Paola Gaeta, the academy’s director, in its annual report.

None of this would have surprised the prophet Jeremiah, who reported: “They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace” (Jeremiah 6:14 and 8:11).

Yet hope is within reach.

In the months and years ahead, we’ll be sharing how the media ministry of TWR brings Hope Within Reach in painful, difficult, dangerous places. Our God is in the business of breaking down barriers, sometimes through media. We’re starting this quarter by showing Hope Within Reach in times and places of conflict, focusing on three places: Nigeria in West Africa; Russia and Ukraine; and the Middle East.

The Geneva Academy’s 2024 annual report (released in July 2025) found the Middle East and North Africa to be the world’s most conflict-affected region, identifying 45 conflicts. We’ll focus in March on three of the countries named in the report: Syria, Yemen and Israel.

When it comes to Israel, much of the world’s attention was focused in 2025 on the conflict over Gaza. But we’ll show how the Word of God through media can reach toward the root causes of conflict. We’ll tell you about initiatives reaching Russian-speaking Jews in Israel. These efforts are demonstrating how peace can be found only in Jesus.

In Yemen, which has been in a civil war since 2014, and Syria, in a civil war since 2011, we’re showing how hope is within reach through the programs Hope for Yemen and Hope for Syria. We’re meeting today’s generation where they are, on such platforms as WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook.

In February, we’ll be looking not only at the conflict between Ukraine and Russia but at the challenges confronting the Christian minority in the North Caucasus region of Russia.

We’re starting this month with Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa and the country where Christians are most likely to be killed for their faith, according to Open Doors. We’ll hear from individuals who are boldly serving God at risk to themselves. They trust our God, the God who brings Hope Within Reach.

The challenges are great, but our God is greater. Come, join us to see how hope is within reach even in the most desperate circumstances.
