Maintenance Workers Make Great Missionaries
Does your knowledge of maintenance make you a go-to person for friends and family? Does supporting others with your technical abilities bring you joy? Perhaps you are experienced in construction, landscaping or vehicle repair. Would you consider taking your skills to the mission field?
Whether you’re looking for a more meaningful career or wondering how you can continue serving God in your retirement, TWR (also known as Trans World Radio) has a place for you. The opportunities are both critical and immediate.
The Opportunity
We at TWR are on a mission to reach the world for Christ by mass media so that lasting fruit is produced. With a potential reach of 4 billion people worldwide, TWR uses the best tools available to share lasting hope – whether by radio, social media, podcasts or videos.
With your handyman skills, you can fill one of the maintenance technician positions at TWR’s offices worldwide, including at our U.S. office in Cary, North Carolina, or at one of our offices in Africa.
Our maintenance personnel could be described as the oil in the cogs of the ministry: Nothing could run without them. They keep our facilities up and running so field workers can continue producing the radio programs and digital media content that spread hope to the world.
Since many of our current workers are nearing the end of their careers, we urgently need people willing to be trained up for these roles, especially in our U.S. office. So if you or someone you know could be a good fit, read on. Facilities repairs and general upkeep are pivotal to Christian missions.
Could This Opportunity Be for You?
Across the world, maintenance technicians at TWR keep our whole ministry running – quite literally. And Paul Stobbe, the maintenance manager at TWR’s U.S. office, weighed in on the type of people suited for the position, saying, “They have a vast knowledge about anything physical or mechanical and are not afraid to learn, analyze and explore.”
General abilities in areas such as landscaping, construction, mechanics, carpentry, plumbing, HVAC and electricity are crucial for capable care of the property. With the U.S. office containing 21 departments and approximately 120 staff members – and an onsite lodge able to house 30 guests – countless aspects of the property need regular TLC. This job will keep you on your toes, with challenges arising from many places. So, flexible problem solvers are sure to thrive!
Beyond the U.S. facility, each of our offices in Africa is looking for a handyman as well. In addition to upkeep of buildings and residences, technicians in this area of the world receive the opportunity to service the antenna towers and associated hardware, sometimes at heights of over 500 feet – views and thrills included!
Technical aspects of the job aside, candidates for these maintenance roles must embrace the relational and missional side of their job. “It’s very important that they would have a heart for missions,” Stobbe says.
Stobbe himself serves as an example of working with a purpose, as his role as maintenance manager involves more than just a job – it’s a ministry. His passion for the Lord and for people means he genuinely cares for and invests in his team. He is looking to train a missions-minded individual to assume his role when he steps away. And the team in Africa is looking for a gospel-centered maintenance manager, too.
We are seeking people with the ability to see themselves as part of the global ministry of TWR, understanding that their work directly contributes to TWR’s greater purpose of spreading the gospel. And as with other missionaries, those serving with TWR build a team of support – in both prayer and finances – on their way to using their skills to serve the kingdom of God.
Opportunities abound. Now that you know that maintenance skills can help fulfill the Great Commission, will you or someone you know answer the call?
