Summer of Impact 2022: Alex, Marketing and Communications Intern

By Malise Terrell
A-V Production, Marketing, Americas, Global, Internship (2-3 mo.), N America
8 July 2022

Born in Maine, Alex Tan grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is studying graphic design and criminal justice at George Washington University, where she will graduate in the fall of 2023.

By God’s providence, Alex’s father was introduced to TWR’s longest serving missionary, Bill Mial, by a mutual friend. Then, he was connected to TWR MOTION’s director, Candace Mackie, who made him aware of TWR’s internships.

Shortly thereafter, the father and daughter made the drive to Cary, North Carolina, to tour TWR while Alex was in the application process. We are so glad he did!

Alex loves reading, going to museums, biking and listening to podcasts.

Q: What caused you to get involved in the internship program with TWR?

My goal with my internship is to try an industry or type of work with which I am completely unfamiliar. For TWR, I have never worked for a Christian organization or in an animation/video context, and I was excited to try it out.

Q: Have you always been interested in missions?

I have always been interested in missions, but I have realized that my definition of ‘missions’ has expanded and changed so much over the years.

Q: What do you feel your calling is, and how does this summer fit into that?

My calling is to bring joy and hope to people through accessible and intentional design, and this summer allows me to do that through both a marketing and interactive lens.

Q: What projects are you going to be involved in?

I am currently creating and designing templates for TWR’s Advent Calendar, redesigning displays throughout the Cary office, redesigning the Intern Handbook, and assisting TWR MOTION with projects and storyboarding.

Q: How does your internship align with your passions and calling?

Both my passion and calling have to do with designing and creating beautiful things to communicate the gospel and make people happy, and my internship allows me to do that with an amazing team of believers.

Q: What is the biggest challenge you have encountered so far in your internship, and how have you overcome it?

I think that the biggest challenges have been brainstorming for some of my larger projects. It was overwhelming to be given a Microsoft Word document and then be told to design an entire Advent campaign. However, Jeannine (my supervisor) and Denali (a fellow intern) were so helpful in giving me good feedback and allowing me to experiment and explore different ideas and variations.

Q: What were you most looking forward to during your internship?

I am looking forward to learning a lot from the Marcom and MOTION teams and to growing spiritually and as a designer.

Q: What was your biggest goal for this summer?

My biggest goal for the summer is to push myself out of my comfort zone.

Q: What is one thing you have learned this summer?

I have been learning to balance working and resting intentionally.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about being here so far?

The Marcom and MOTION teams. Everyone has been so kind, and we have so much fun while creating amazing products and content.

Q: What are your post-college plans?

I have no clue! For almost all my life, I have had a plan, and I would do everything in my power to align to that path, but I have been really enjoying stepping back and allowing God to work in my life. It has been scary but so fulfilling to witness.

Q: Fun fact: What is your favorite food?

My mom’s Hainanese chicken rice is the ultimate comfort food.

Q: Tell us a little-known or fun fact about yourself!

I absolutely hate popsicle sticks. Something about them makes my skin crawl.
