Training Men to Battle Pornography Addiction

By TWR Staff
Global
The stranglehold of pornography on men’s lives is intensely targeted in the just-released fourth installment of the popular Every Man A Warrior Bible-study series.

The brand-new book meets a vital need because men are losing the battle for holiness and moral freedom, said Lonnie Berger, global men’s ministry director for TWR (Trans World Radio) and creator of the series. Called Every Man A Pure Warrior, the book offers a very personal approach to the subject by author Bob Reehm, who was Berger’s close friend and colleague when the two worked for the international Navigators ministry.

“Pornography has swept over the world like a tsunami,” said Berger, who joined TWR in 2017 to help expand the global media ministry’s outreach to men. “Many books have been written describing its horrendous impact on men, marriages and families – even pastors. Every Man A Pure Warrior offers seven key principles that must be followed to get and stay free from enslaving sins like pornography.”

The book opens with troubling statistics about pornography such as these: Videos on just one major porn site were watched 92 billion times in 2016; the average child has been exposed to pornography on the internet by age 11; 96% of young adults say they treat pornography either positively, acceptingly or neutrally – not disapprovingly – when discussing it with friends. Reehm then goes on to frankly share about his own 40-year battle against pornography addiction and to expound seven practical principles, summed up in an easy-to-remember acrostic, for breaking its hold.

“Right after my parents’ divorce, I was exposed to pornography,” Reehm writes in the book. “I didn’t have the maturity, understanding, or a parent/mentor to help me sort out my feelings. … I learned how to sexualize all my emotions, and I couldn’t even define or verbalize the emotions I was feeling.”

The learning process is intense, Berger said, and men who wish to participate are strongly encouraged to first complete the previous three Every Man A Warrior studies, giving them a firm foundation in the spiritual disciplines they will call upon. A certain level of spiritual depth and commitment is necessary for the program to be effective, he added.

Reehm and Berger worked closely to ensure that Every Man A Pure Warrior is a worthy successor to the first three volumes, which have been studied by 40,000 men in 34 countries and 13 languages. The manuscript went through five versions and additional revisions before being field-tested in groups totaling 160 men.

One field-test participant wrote, “Every Man A Pure Warrior has given me freedom from the prison of porn. This study is such a blessing. Instead of daily bondage and struggle, I now have intimacy with God and my wife.”
