Engineers Make Great Missionaries

By Sarah Mummert
Engineering, Global

Are you passionate about engineering?
Are you experienced with RF systems or electronics? Perhaps you have experience in radio broadcasting or antenna repair. But is there any way you can use your technical skills to bring people to Jesus Christ?

Indeed, there is.

Whether you are looking for a more meaningful career or wondering how you can continue serving God in your retirement, TWR (also known as Trans World Radio) has a place for you. (Apply Now!)

The Opportunity

We at TWR are on a mission to reach the world for Christ by mass media so that lasting fruit is produced. With a potential reach of 4 billion people worldwide, TWR uses the best tools available to share lasting hope – whether by radio, social media, podcasts or videos.

None of this would be possible without our engineers and technical staff. These capable individuals serve at our transmitting sites all over the world, directly enabling our broadcasts by executing large-scale projects, finding clear frequencies for broadcasts and keeping up with repairs.

TWR is looking for the next generation of technicians and engineers to fill key roles and continue broadcasting hope to the world. Opportunities abound for those looking for a second career, too. So, if you are looking to serve God with your time and expertise, read on. (Or Apply Now!)

Could This Opportunity Be for You?

TWR’s radio transmitting sites in Africa and Guam need technicians and engineers with experience in electrical or mechanical engineering. If you have a basic knowledge of RF theory, transistor circuits, logic circuits, power circuits and general test equipment use, we want to count you in!

At our transmitting sites, you’ll participate in the installation, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment. Broadcast systems include towers, antennas, tuning circuits, transmitters, audio processors, computers, remote control, computer networks, generators, studio equipment and more.

Some technical roles assist TWR’s partner offices with their broadcasting equipment, to train their personnel and provide consulting advice.

Are you an industrial mechanic? Our 20-acre transmitting site on Guam could use you! The transmitter hall, shop, buildings, towers and antennas all need regular care – including planning, development, construction and remodeling. Having a working knowledge of industrial-quality building systems such as HVAC, alarms and grounds would be a plus.

Our office in South Africa needs an engineering manager to handle risk and incident management, maintenance controls, asset information management, quality management and continuous improvements. You’ll also work short term in other locations around the continent.

If you’ve worked in an engineering context, the management position may not require you to have a corresponding degree. And while a degree in electrical or mechanical engineering provides an excellent knowledge base, we will consider equivalent experience. For instance, are you an experienced ham radio operator? Your skills are directly translatable to a TWR transmitting site!  (Apply Now!)

“It’s important also for those who are studying the latest technologies to recognize that there are roles in missions where they can bring what they have learned,” says Joe Barker, our chief technology officer. “That’s a contribution that I think a lot of especially younger computer science engineers could bring to the table.”

Technical skills aside, your role as a technician or engineer with TWR is inherently missional.

“The first and foremost thing is, do you want people in other parts of the world to hear the gospel?Barker asks.Is that a passion for you?

If your answer is yes, we would love to have you join our team as we broadcast the hope of the gospel to the nations! As with other missionaries, those serving with TWR get the opportunity to build a support team – in both prayer and finances – as they seek to use their skills to serve God’s kingdom.

Now that you know your technical skills can help fulfill the Great Commission, will you answer the call?
