Mission 66: Closing the Gap Between Bible Access and Biblical Understanding

TWR’s Mission 66 program aims to bridge the gap between Bible access and in-depth biblical understanding. “No other ministry in the world is producing a culturally contextualized, chapter-by-chapter audio teaching program through the entire Bible in the world’s top languages with native-speaker co-hosts,” said Jon Fugler, Mission 66 director.  

Fugler’s referring to one of TWR’s newest programs, Mission 66, a Bible commentary that takes listeners on a journey from Genesis to Revelation throughout the course of more than 600 episodes. In a world where Bible access doesn’t necessarily translate to doctrinal understanding, Mission 66 aims to increase biblical literacy in today’s generations and tomorrow’s future leaders. 

How Is Mission 66 Unique?  

The conversational and relational tone of Mission 66 especially appeals to younger listeners. Episodes connect biblical truth to the real circumstances of listeners: their families, their work, their struggles, their hopes. They're also accessible to people from educationally diverse backgrounds, from the theologically trained to someone who may be encountering  Scripture for the first time. The goal of Mission 66 is not simply information; the ultimate goal involves transformation.

Mission 66's Digital Approach to Reaching Young Adults

According to the “State of the Bible” report from the American Bible Society, today’s younger generations are more likely to use a digital format for Bible study, whether that means opening an app to read Scripture or using audio or video for more engagement. To encourage young adults in their spiritual growth, Mission 66 is available on the TWR360 app, where listeners can find audio programming, a free study guide and commentary with the ability to sort by topic or Scripture.  

Bringing Cultural Context to Bible Teaching Worldwide

Originally taught in Portuguese since 2006 as Rota 66, the Bible content in Mission 66 is taken from the world-class teaching of Brazilian Bible teacher Dr. Luiz Sayão. Local speakers understand their own cultural background, the questions people are asking and the way Scripture applies in their context, which makes them the ideal choice to adapt Mission 66 into various languages. This partnership between Dr. Sayão, RTM Brazil and TWR allows his commentary to be internationally contextualized into the world’s 10 most spoken languages and delivered through TWR’s extensive Christian media infrastructure. In addition to several other languages distributed by Dr. Sayão prior to his partnership with TWR, including Mandarin, Japanese and German, Mission 66 is also currently available in English, Latin American Spanish and Indonesian.
