“There are many ways that you can serve our Lord in the TWR family. I invite you to explore this website to discover how God can employ your unique gifts and talents to bring the transforming message of Jesus Christ to the ends of the world.” — Lauren Libby, TWR President
At TWR, we stand by the conviction that missions is not limited. We believe that God's kingdom work is expansive — crossing continents, lives and careers. And God will use anyone with willing hands and an open heart to share the gospel — people like Piet. And if the Lord can use a senior accountant to reach the world, how could he use you?
We sat down with Piet to talk about the journey that brought him into the TWR family and how the Lord is using his skills to help share the gospel:
So, Piet, what was your career prior to coming to TWR?
When I came from school, it was economic school and bookkeeping school. I joined the army for my service and then worked as a bookkeeper for a garage. I later worked as a bookkeeper in a soap factory for 16 years. After that 16 years, I wasn’t a bookkeeper anymore but did production and planning. Then, after eight years at another company, I became unemployed for three years. It was then I saw the advertisement from TWR in a magazine searching for a bookkeeper.
What is your role now? How does your job at TWR compare with your past role?
My role now is also as a senior accountant — a bookkeeper. To pay bills for airtime, reimbursements and that kind of stuff. That is mostly the work I am doing.
What is different? Well, the bookkeeping, happily, is not different. Debit is debit. Credit is credit. And the rules are the same, and I like the system of how bookkeeping works. Most people think it is boring, but it is a system that works very well, and it is very thought out. The difference is not what you’re doing but where. You are doing the work with TWR to extend and to get people to know everywhere in the world the love of Jesus Christ and what he has done for us. And that is the difference. Some factories where I worked, of course, you have to do your work, but they had to raise money and get more money. The mission of course is very different, and that is what I like more about work with TWR than what I did before.
What would you say to someone who is exploring a transition from a secular job to a mission’s role?
It is a privilege to work at this kind of organization. I’ve worked in my church, I’ve been an elder in my church, you can do missionary work in your own family and in your own neighborhood. But it is a privilege to work at a kind of institution like TWR, but you must be certain that it is a calling. You have more responsibilities than, in my case, TWR. I have a responsibility in my family. I have a responsibility in my church also. And sometimes there are a lot of responsibilities. The best advice: Bring it in prayer to God [to learn] what he wants for you in your life.
Piet serves with TWR as a senior accountant in the Netherlands, helping to manage ministry finances and steward our resources well. His is a crucial role, which keeps programs going on the air and shows that God can use any skill set to further the gospel!
