Four Ways You Can Pray for Hassaniya Speakers
[Estimated reading time: 2 minutes]
Despite the 6.1 million Hassaniya speakers worldwide, there is no complete Bible in their language.
The Hassaniya language is spoken by 36 people groups in 14 countries, according to Joshua Project. The largest group speaking Hassaniya is the Moors. Hassaniya speakers are deeply rooted in their religion. Religious observance is woven into the fabric of daily life, from the five daily prayers to the celebration of Islamic festivals and rituals.
Among the Hassaniya-speaking Moors of Mauritania, 99.9% follow the Islamic religion, while only 0.1% are Christian. To borrow the imagery from Hosea 10:12, let’s break up fallow ground, seeking the Lord’s favor on behalf of Hassaniya speakers.
1. Pray that radio overcomes barriers in Mauritania.
Radio remains the most effective tool with which to reach people in this West African country. Pray that the Lord would give the TWR West Africa staff creativity and discernment as they seek to develop programming to address the ever-changing needs within this community.
2. Pray for a movement of God among Hassaniya speakers.
Ask God for spiritual awakening among the Hassaniya speakers. Ask that he would mobilize prayer networks and support groups in Africa and beyond that would intercede for this people group. May God’s love shine brightly in the lives of those who believe despite the challenges they face.
3. Pray for protection for Christians in Mauritania.
Converts to Christianity in Mauritania often face legal prosecution and social exclusion. Families disown new believers, spouses are forced to separate and jobs are denied. Ask the Father to protect his people, and may the hearts of their persecutors be changed.
4. Pray on behalf of the TWR West Africa team.
In addition to airing Hassaniya Arabic versions of programs such as The Way of Righteousness, Hope in the Desert, Stories of the Prophets and The Messiah, TWR West Africa is exploring new opportunities through mobile apps, WhatsApp messaging and social media. Pray that these efforts will bear much fruit.
