Hope Amid Tanzanian Violence
[Estimated reading time: 2 minutes]

In a nation known for peace and stability, the violence that broke out alongside Tanzania’s Oct. 29 election was stunning.
“Our beloved nation … has experienced shocking levels of violence and destruction,” wrote the manager of a TWR partner radio station in the country.*
But what man means for evil, God can use for good (see Genesis 50:20).
“Speaking from experience here in Africa, when peace is disturbed, when people are not feeling peaceful, there is an openness to the gospel,” said Egide Bandyatuyaga, TWR East Africa ministry director. “In the spiritual realm, people are looking for safety, looking for protection.”
In that Oct. 29 election, incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan won with 98% of the vote, Christianity Today reported. Following the election, violence broke out between police and protesters in Dar es Salaam and other major cities.
In a report broadcast Nov. 21, CNN alleged that police assaulted people involved in the protests with lethal force, leaving their bodies in mass graves. President Hassan acknowledged there had been casualties and set up a commission to look into the matter, but her government called the CNN report biased and misleading.
During the height of the protests, the government shut down communication networks, and the country was without internet access for a week. But the manager of our partner station and his family were safe, and “our radio station remained on air proclaiming the gospel and messages of hope to our listeners,” he said.
How to Pray
Our partner and Bandyatuyaga are asking believers everywhere to pray for Tanzania in this difficult time. Here’s how Bandyatuyaga suggested we pray:
- Pray for security to be restored quickly and for all people. May the political leaders find a way to resolve their differences in a peaceful way that guarantees security and rights for all.
- Pray for churches and Christian ministries to preach a message of peace and reconciliation.
- Pray for bereaved families to find comfort in the Lord. May the Lord provide for their needs.
- Pray for stations to continue to reach out to people with a message of love from God and to be used of him to bring more people to salvation.
* For security reasons, we are not identifying the station or the manager.
