Unmasking the Gospel in 2021: Connor, Mechanical Engineering Intern

By Rosie McMahan
Africa, Africa - West & Central
TWR’s mission is to reach the world for Christ so that lasting fruit is produced. This can be accomplished in ways big and small, both by leading people to Christ and serving them in the day-to-day. Connor has traveled far this summer to make God’s love known in the small ways, whether it’s doing repairs, transporting supplies or chatting with locals. In West Africa, Connor seeks to have meaningful conversations and build deep connections with local workers during his internship.

Connor grew up in Portage, Michigan, and he currently attends Western Michigan University. He will be graduating in the Spring of 2022 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. This summer, he is serving in West Africa as a Mechanical Engineering intern. In his free time, Connor loves outdoor activities like biking, sports and hammocking.

Q: How did you hear about TWR?
Through the traveling team (thetravelingteam.org) and a friend.

Q: What caused you to get involved in the internship program with TWR in West Africa?
I wanted to use my skills and knowledge in a way to further God's kingdom. I chose West Africa because of the community outreach focus and the physical need there. I wanted to help those with a harder day-to-day life have hope in something greater.

Q: Have you always been interested in missions?
Missions have been more of an interest since serving shortly in Guatemala a few years ago.

Q: What projects are you going to be involved in?
I will help fix a dirt bike, supply wood for a drawbridge, fix a four-wheeler and install solar panels.

Q: Are there any challenges you have or anticipate experiencing? How will you face them?
The language barrier and heat. I will communicate slowly to learn French and move slowly to stay cool.

Q: What are you most looking forward to during your internship?
I am most looking forward to connecting with the local workers TWR employs and learning their way of life and struggles.

Q: What is your biggest goal for this summer?
To have a deep spiritual conversation with a local worker!

Q: What are your post-college plans?
At the moment I'm leaving it up to the Lord.

Q: Fun fact: what’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?
I have eaten duck head in China.
