Judy was born in Durban, the fourth of seven children. "As I grew up, I diligently followed a life patterned by what my parents had taught me and had practised themselves," she said. Her parents had taught her be respectful to everyone around her and to follow all the rituals of their religion.

"I learnt that we needed to do penance to help pay for our sins and to win merit or favour with God. As a teenager, I often lay awake at night terribly afraid. I tried hard to be a good person, but all that I said and did still troubled my conscience daily as I was never sure if 'good' was 'good enough.'”

As a young woman, Judy met Marlon, and they married soon afterwards. He was a devout follower of the same religion as Judy and lived his life trying to understand and serve God through religious practices. They were very happy together.

In 1998, Judy's younger sister was visiting a Christian mission with friends when she came to Christ. Judy’s sister told her that she was praying for her and gave her a Bible Scripture to read. Judy searched to find the Scripture but couldn't. Her husband, Marlon, then took the Bible away from her and found the verse almost immediately.

"Then a very strange thing happened," she said. "Marlon became very quiet and started to cry. A little while later when his sobbing finally stopped, he said to me that he was going to become a Christian. He asked me to read the verse, but it did not make any sense to me. That night he was converted to Christianity."

Judy was completely shocked. She did not understand what was happening. "Everything that I had put my trust in had failed me. My peaceful, happy and content life had just become a nightmare. I became really upset and started to question this Jesus. I asked aloud, ‘Jesus, who are you? Why have you ruined my life like this? You have taken a perfectly happy life and destroyed it. How can I believe and worship you when I do not even know you? If you want me to believe in you then you must reveal yourself to me. Only then would I believe.’"

Unknown to Judy, Marlon had put on a local community radio station called Good News Community Radio before he went to work on that morning. They used to air various programmes from TWR. Just at the time that Judy was challenging Jesus in her heart and mind, Chuck Swindoll started to preach on the programme that was airing.

"Now at that instant as I had asked the Lord Jesus to reveal himself to me, I heard a loud voice coming from the radio saying, "WHO ARE YOU FOR GOD TO REVEAL HIMSELF TO YOU? YOU ARE MAN ON EARTH AND HE IS GOD IN HEAVEN!" He said it again loudly and then went on to say, "If you want to believe in him, you must believe by faith, that he died on the cross for your sins and that he rose on the third day to give you eternal life."

It was the first time that Judy had ever heard the gospel, but she was certain that this promise of forgiveness of sins and of eternal life was the answer to her fears. "Immediately, I fell before the Lord and started to confess my sins, I told the Lord everything that I had ever done wrong in my life. I wanted a new beginning and to be cleansed from my old way of life. I realised that even though I had tried so hard to be good, I could never do anything that could make me acceptable to this Holy God."
