Unmasking the Gospel in 2021: Emily, Agricultural/Community Development Intern
By Rosie McMahan

Coming to TWR answered a lifelong prayer for Emily. Since she was eight years old, Emily has been praying about a way she could get involved in missions. As she grew, her inspiration for sharing with others about the Creator of the universe only increased. This summer, she’s acting on that inspiration in West Africa, where she plans to push herself out of her comfort zone and grow closer to God.
Emily was born and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She is currently a student at Columbia International University in South Carolina, where she is majoring in International Community Development. This summer, she is serving at the West African Transmitting Station (WATS) in Benin as the Agricultural/Community Development intern.
Q: How did you hear about TWR?
I went looking for an internship on Handshake (a job search tool for college students) and found this one. Then I learned a lot about TWR through their website and wanted to be a part of what they were doing.
Q: What caused you to get involved in the internship program with TWR in West Africa?
The agricultural internship is specific to only the West African Transmitting Station (WATS), so that's why I went with West Africa instead of somewhere else.
Q: Have you always been interested in missions?
Actually, yes. I started praying when I was eight or nine years old that God would send me to be a missionary. I didn't know what that really meant or what it would even look like. It is my greatest joy and passion to know the Creator of the universe and I want the world to know him! Columbia International University (my university) has a mission that we refer back to over and over again: "To know him and to make him known."
Q: What projects are you going to be involved in?
Community outreach projects.
Q: Are there any challenges you have or anticipate experiencing? How will you face them?
There is a language barrier for sure, but as long as you are friendly and don't take yourself too seriously, you'll be okay.
Q: What are you most looking forward to during your internship?
There's too much to choose. But I am really excited about what the Lord will bring out of this summer and the relationships that will form.
Q: What is your biggest goal for this summer?
To grow closer to the Lord and to try new things that are outside my comfort zone.
Q: What are your post-college plans?
I’m not really sure yet, but I am hoping to apply to some missions agencies.
Q: Fun fact: what’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?
I’ve eaten chicken feet and pig liver -- 0/10 would not recommend.
