Unmasking the Gospel in 2021: Selena, Finance Intern

TWR’s mission of hope seeks to continually add children to the family of God. Growing up in a Christian home as one of nine children, Selena has always known what it feels like to have a big family. This summer, despite original plans to stay in the US, she has taken a step of faith to serve with TWR internationally.
Nashville, Tennessee has been Selena’s home since she was seven months old. Now a student at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Selena is double majoring in Finance and Music. This summer, she is serving as the Finance intern on the island of Guam for TWR. Selena eagerly anticipates putting her classroom skills in finance into practice in Guam, as well as the spiritual growth that she looks forward to experiencing during her time there.
Q: How did you hear about TWR?
I heard about TWR through the Handshake platform (job search tool for college students).
Q: What caused you to get involved in the internship program with TWR?
I was looking for an internship and submitted my resume through Handshake. Shortly thereafter, TWR reached out to me and asked if I wanted to submit an official application.
Q: What caused you to want to serve in Guam?
When going through the interview process, I thought that I was going to be serving in the Cary, North Carolina office. But when they offered me the position, they asked if I would be interested in going overseas to serve on Guam. I prayed about this and felt led to accept TWR’s offer to serve on Guam for the summer.
Q: Have you always been interested in missions?
I’ve definitely prayed about missions before but have never felt that the time was right in my life until now.
Q: What projects are you going to be involved in?
Working on finances in the Asia region and also doing financial analysis on a global level.
Q: Are there any challenges you have or anticipate experiencing? How will you face them?
There may be little bumps in the road when learning new software, but I have a great relationship with my supervisor, Carol Witthun, and she is willing to help me learn and answer all of my questions!
Q: What are you most looking forward to during your internship?
Being able to put to practice what I have learned in class and also building relationships with the TWR family on Guam.
Q: What is your biggest goal for this summer?
To grow in my understanding of the Finance world and also grow spiritually.
Q: What are your post-college plans?
I would like to work with numbers, possibly as a financial analyst. As a side gig, I want to work in the studio as a musician.
Q: Fun fact: what’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?
The weirdest food I’ve eaten is probably squirrel. My brother is a hunter and he shot squirrel in our backyard once. It wasn’t terrible once I got past the fact that I was eating a rodent. It tasted like tough, greasy chicken.
